Alzheimer's and Brain Health: Centene's Commitment to Research and Innovation
Health & Wellness, Transforming Communities
June is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month and Centene is committed to supporting the Alzheimer's Association's mission to raise awareness of the devastating disease. Alzheimer's is a fatal condition that kills nerve cells and tissue in the brain, affecting an individual's ability to remember, think, plan, and care for themselves. More than five million individuals are living with the disease in the U.S. with more than 15 million people providing support as caregivers.
As a global healthcare leader committed to addressing the holistic healthcare needs of every individual, Centene shares the Alzheimer's Association's vision of a world without Alzheimer's. With more than 140,000 of our members living with Alzheimer's, this disease hits home in every community in which we serve. Centene believes that innovation within the healthcare industry and investing in cutting-edge treatments is key to addressing and resolving this significant public health challenge.
Centene is committed to accelerating the development and implementation of personalized medicine and leverages research, technology, and collaborative partnerships to do so. Our recent partnership with Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis will fund their School of Personalized Medicine Initiative, providing up to $100 million dollars over ten years of research focusing on prevalent and deadly diseases, including Alzheimer's.
Continuing that commitment to research, Centene is also a member of Leaders Engaged on Alzheimer's Disease (LEAD Coalition). LEAD focuses the nation's attention on accelerating transformational progress in:
- Care and support to enrich the quality of life of those with dementia and their caregivers
- Detection and diagnosis
- Research leading to prevention, effective treatment, and eventual cures
Centene also consistently supports chapters of the Alzheimer's Association across the country. We've partnered with the Greater Missouri Chapter and remain steadfast in our pledge to contribute to the critical research being conducted around brain health, disease prevention, treatment methods, and ultimately, a cure. Centene's health plans are also involved with the Association, including Louisiana Healthcare Connections since 2013 and Sunflower Health Plan in Kansas.
Additionally, Centene's Caregiving CollaborationTM program helps identify and assess the needs of caregivers and offers a variety of educational information and organizational tools. Caregivers are connected to online and local resources, including Alzheimer's-related support systems, to help them take better care of themselves and our members.
At Centene, our deepest commitment is to keep our members at the forefront of everything we do. The ultimate goal of these partnerships, and every investment we make, is to remove barriers to care and provide greater access to the highest quality treatments available.
